Fons Americanus

Kara Walker’s work struck me as a bit of a cop out, as she is really just repeating early themes and imagery, without there being very much new to say. Having said that, I do like her previous work, but this is just a bit the same.

What struck me socially and politically about the piece however, was the juxtaposition in class and power between the visitors and the poor staff, who were manfully trying to keep kids out of the water, wherein their overindulgent mothers were letting them play.
